Exercises before knee replacement:

Ankle pumps:

In this exercise, you lie down comfortably on your bed or your floor. Now bring your foot towards you and stretch your calf muscles slowly. Hold in this position for 5 seconds and then go to the previous position.

Again repeat the process. Bring your foot towards you while stretching the calf muscles. Hold here for 5 seconds and then release.

Do this exercise in 15 to 20 repetitions 2-3 times a day. This exercise is good among exercises before the replacement surgery.

This exercise helps in improving blood circulation around the knee joint. It also mobilizes the nerves around the knee joint improving the health of knee joint

Isometric quadriceps exercise:

In this exercise, you lie down comfortably as earlier. Now take a towel and make a role of it. You can also take readymade bolster. It is easily available in the market.

Now please this towel below the knee and gently press this towel with knee downwards. Now release the pressure and bring back to the previous position.

Repeat the process for 15 to 20 counts 2 to 3 times a day this exercise improves the strength of muscles of the front of the thigh bone. This exercise is good among exercises before the replacement surgery.

Straight leg raise:

In this exercise, you keep lying on the floor bed on your back. Now raise one leg up to the height of one feet in height. Hold here for 5 seconds and then bring your leg back.

Now do the same process with another leg. Hold for 5 seconds and then bring it back. If you cannot hold the leg for 5 seconds then it’s ok you just bring it up and bring it down slowly.

This exercise is also very helpful in increasing the strength around the knee joint. Do this exercise in 10 to 15 repetitions 2 to 3 times a day. This exercise is good among exercises before the replacement surgery.

Sitting kicks:

In this exercise, you have to sit on a table or a chair slightly above the ground. Your legs should be hanging so that your feet do not touch the floor.

Now bring one leg up and straighten the knee. Hold here for 5 seconds and then bring it down.

Now repeat this process with another leg. Hold for 5 seconds and then bring it down. This exercise improves the strength around the knee joint greatly.

Do this exercise in 15 to 20 repetitions 2 to 3 times a day. This exercise is good among exercises before the replacement surgery.

 Hamstring curls:

You lie down straight on your stomach. Now gently bend your knee and bring your heel towards the back of the thigh. If you can touch the back of thigh then it is very good. If you are not able to do that is also ok.

Now bring the leg back to the previous position. Repeat this process again. Bend your knee and bring your Heal towards your back of the thigh. And then bring it back to the previous position.

This exercise improves the strength of muscles with support back of thigh bone. This exercise also improves the mobility of the knee joint as well as the flexibility also.

This exercise also does the stretching of muscles supporting the front side of the thigh bone. Do this exercise for 15 to 20 repetitions 2 to 3 times a day. This exercise is good among exercises before the replacement surgery.

Do these exercises as advised for at least 20 to 30 days before knee replacement surgery. And it will greatly impact the recovery after knee replacement surgery.
